Make Storage Easy

Packing well is the first step to storing smart. At AKM Self Storage, we like to think of loading a unit like playing Tetris—the better the fit, the safer your items. Our Kurri Kurri facility services the Hunter Valley, and we’re here to help you make the most of your space.

Proper packing protects your belongings and makes storage simpler. Goods insurance is recommended but not mandatory. Remember, if it’s worth storing, it’s worth insuring.

Packing Your Boxes

  • Buy lots of packing boxes. Using the same sized boxes (where possible) makes for easy stacking.
  • Try to fill each box to the top and use crumpled newspaper to fill gaps.
  • Put the heaviest boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on top.
  • Seal all boxes completely with packing tape to keep dust out.
  • Number each box clearly on all sides with a black marker and label the contents or the room it belongs to.
  • Use larger tea chest cartons for linen, Tupperware, toys, and light items.
  • Use book/wine cartons for heavier items like books, wine, and appliances.

Protecting Furniture & Fragile Items

  • Store mattresses in thick plastic or mattress covers and tape them to keep dust out.
  • Disassemble furniture like tables and bed frames to save space.
  • Place screws, cords, and bolts in labelled snap-lock bags and tape them to the matching item.
  • Wrap breakables in bubble wrap and pack them in crystal/fragile cartons.
  • Store mirrors, pictures, and artwork on their end, not flat.
  • Cover fabric lounges with a 2/3-seater lounge cover and seal with tape.

Storing Appliances & Unit Organisation

  • Clean all appliances before placing them into storage.
  • For fridges or freezers, leave the door slightly ajar to prevent mould. Place the power cord inside the door to keep it open.
  • You can store a bag of linen inside the fridge if needed.
  • Keep frequently used items like clothing near the front of your unit for easy access.
  • Use a high-quality padlock for security and store keys in a safe place.
